    • Lived in Georgetown, MD, until he was three. The family moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL, in 1939. His first school was in Daytona Beach, FL, then Jacksonville Beach, FL, but mostly in Miami. He went to work for the Miami Herald as apprentice photo engraver, and spent the rest of his professional career in the graphic arts business. (interview in 2002)

      Message from Hume Laidman, 30.12.2014:

      Greetings Nick,
Time for a revision of the charts.  Jim Laidman died Christmas Day after taking a spill on the ice at Bachelor Mountain Ski Areal  in Oregon. As you know, he has survived lung cancer, a mild stroke, heart surgery, and some other odds and ends including falling out of a tree and impaling himself on the stub of an adjacent tree when he was eight years of age.
I talked to him two hours before the accident occurred and he had completed a sleigh ride through fresh snow and was ecstatic about how much fun that was.  After that he slipped on some ice and hit his head on it.  He seemed to be well but shortly thereafter he went to take a nap and when Mary Helen looked in on him he was in troublqqe.  She called the rescue people and he was transported by helicopter wot a hospital in Bend, Oregon.  There he was pronounced gone as a result of bleeding in the brain.  We are going to Florida on the first of January for family services there in Royal Palm Beachq.q

You may remember that my mother died on Christmas Eve in Georgia.

      Hume
