    • Margaret Browne wrote in March 2015:

Richard's father was a major in the Polish air force – this meant they moved around a lot. Richard was born in Bydgoszcz but when war broke out they were in Lvov (Lviv) which is now Ukraine. The family are Catholics but needed to flee from the Russians - his grandmother stayed and was never seen again. Richard & his mother had to make their way across Europe to France where they eventually left by boat for England. His father was in the meantime serving with the Air force.
When Richard & his mother fled from Poland in 1939 no documents came with them & he did not have a birth certificate. I knew where he was born and the name of both his parents and this relation discovered he was actually born in 1928 not 1930 as Richard had been led to believe. Although now Richard realises his mother made him younger as neither spoke any English, so he could attend a Preparatory school.
They arrived in England in June 1940 and were taken in by 2 elderly ladies in Hendon and looked after. Richard's father met up with them in England and they were sent to a Nottingham air base. Richard's father was a bomber pilot with the Polish Squadron and luckily managed to survive the war. This is one of the reasons Richard does not want to travel as it brings back his childhood memories of fleeing.
