    Having been in possession of the Laidmans since at least the early eighteenth century, Howlowgill entered into the hands of the Kiplings when it passed to Jonathan Laidman's daughter Elizabeth in 1805, who married Thomas Brown Kipling. It was still owned by the Kiplings in 1871.
