Note: In 1871 Christopher was managing his widowed sister Anne’s farm in Blackwell (census return), whilst his family lived in Carlisle, and he was probably still managing this farm when he committed suicide, since the place of death is Blackwell. Death: Farm bailiff, age 37[?], of Blackwell St Cuthbert, Carlisle. Cause of death: suicide by hanging, no evidence of state of mind. Inquest held 17 Oct 1878. [GRO D1878 Carlisle 10b 102].

Note that Jane may have been doubly recorded: a Jane LAIDYMAN (servant, aged 15) was included in the household at Calthwaite, Cumberland, headed by John GRAHAM and his wife Ann, both aged 60, and these two are likely to be Jane's maternal grandparents. [HO 107/173/1 folio 3 page 10] John GRAHAM is known to have been farming at Hillhouses, near Calthwaite, when Jane's mother Deborah was baptised in 1801, and Jane's father O1992 William LAIDMAN was resident at Hillhouses at the time of the baptism of his children Jane (1825) and John (1827). Furthermore, Jane (as LAIDYMAN, aged 24) was a servant at Thwaite Hall farm, Hutton Roof, at the time of the 1851 census (see below), the household headed by her uncle Christopher GRAHAM and included her maternal grandmother Ann GRAHAM (née STORROW, age 75) and Jane's future husband Thomas WILKINSON.

Since she is not mentioned in her mother’s will of 1862, Jane may have died before that year. However she was married before her mother’s death, and this could also be the reason her unmarried sisters were favoured.

Note: ‘ROAD, STREET, &c., and No. or NAME of HOUSE’ is recorded as ‘Steelgate Cottage’. ‘Civil Parish’ is recorded as ‘Middlesceugh and Braithwaite’. This confirms that the LDS 1881 Census entry for ‘Census Place’ as ‘Middlesbrough W Braithwaite’ was a transcription error. Raughton is in the parish of Dalston, about 5 km N of Ivegill. Monkcastle is some 5 km W of Low Hesket and 4 km N of Ivegill.

Note: (1) LDS transcription of the 1881 Census erroneously gives the location as 'Middlesbrough W Braithwaite'. The original gives the location as 'Middlesceugh, Middlesceugh & Braithwaite', Middlesceugh being about 5 km S of Ivegill. Monk Castle is now Monkcastle, about 4 km N of Ivegill.
(2) Steelgate is probably the same as Steelgate Cottage

John Gunner’s obituary :
John Gunner
Ex-police Capt. John Gunner died Wednesday at his home, 1,051 Lexington Avenue. Capt. Gunner was born in Clapham, London, England, in 1832 [sic], and came to this country with his parents when he was three years old. He attended the public school in Duane Street, and during the civil war was a policeman on the Metropolitan force. He served under Capt. Frank Speight, afterward Inspector, who was in command of the Twenty-ninth Precinct, now the famous “Tenderloin.” Mr. Gunner was in turn patrolman, Roundsman, Sergeant, and acting Captain. He served with distinction as a member of the force during the draft riots of 1863, when he had obtained the rank of Roundsman. Later he was appointed to a full Captaincy, and he served in this capacity up to a few years ago, when he was retired.
Capt. Gunner was a Republican, amd lived in what is now the Twenty-sixth Assembly District for many years. He instructed his son, ex-Port Warden John H. Gunner, in politics, and the latter is now the Republican organization leader in the Twenty-eighth Assembly District. He was a member of the Alma Lodge, 728, F. and A. M.; the Ivy Republican Club, and the Republican clubs of the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-eighth Assembly Districts.
Besides the ex-Port Warden, Capt. Gunner leaves two other sons, a daughter, and a wife.
Funeral services will be held at the residence tonight, the Rev. Dr. Hughes of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre officiating. The interment wil be in Woodlawn Cemetery to-morrow.
[Bill Gunner comments on this: Capt. John Gunner's obituary says he was born in 1832. It also says he emigrated in 1835. I suspect both "facts" are wrong and due to his wife's (or his) sketchy memory of the events. I am assuming he was born in 1831 and emigrated in 1842 on the Hendrik Hudson.]

CALEB SCHOLEFIELD MANN . I am a clerk, in the Steam Navigation Company. I was in the Skin market, Leadenhall, on 7th May; I felt something touch my pocket—I turned round and saw the prisoner close to me, raising his hand from my pocket, with my handkerchief in his hand—he put it to his face, I seized him directly, and gave him into custody.

THOMAS FINK (City policeman, 60). I was in the market, and saw the prosecutor and prisoner struggling—I took the prisoner, and found on him this cigar tube, and this other handkerchief, tied loosely round his neck.
Prisoner. I saw a man take this handkerchief; he threw it to me, and the gentleman turned round and took me.
