Durham Union Workhouse today
Durham Union workhouse was built in 1837 on Crossgate. It was originally intended to accommodate 150 inmates and the architect was George Jackson. In about 1870 an infirmary block and fever wards were added. In 1875 new casual wards and a block for the infirm were built. The workhouse later became Durham Poor Law Institution and then Crossgate Hospital. After the start of the National Health Service in 1948, it became St Margaret's Hospital. Some of the surviving buildings have now been converted to housing. Others have been used by local community organisations.

Hannah Tolhurst ca 1860-1863
An unnamed photo, actually a copy of an original, annotated ‘Copied by J. Weston, Folkestone’. Since it was in the possession of Denise Michael née Laidman, whose distaff side only lived in Folkestone, it is almost certainly one of them. Presuming it is either of Hannah Webb (born ca 1830), or of her daughter Eliza (born ca 1848), the photo was submitted in August 2011 to Jayne Shrimpton, costume historian, whose report may be read in Hannah Tolhurst's notes.
