18 Broadfield Road, Folkestone, Kent
18 Broadfield Road, Folkestone, Kent
This house was apparently bought by Bert Salter when he was married to Edith née Gordon. After Bert’s death Edith lived on there with her maiden sister Katherine (Kate). I used to visit regularly as a child. The living room was on the left (facing the house) and the dining room on the right. Jut at the bottom of the garden was the Folkestone to London train track, where I enjoyed watching the steam locomotives.

From a miniature in possession of Nicholas Michael. The envelope in which it is contained, framed in ivory, bears the inscription (by Denise Michael née Laidman): "This is a miniature of ARABELLA GODDARD, a very famous concert pianist of her day. Her son, Charles Davison, married my great-aunt Laura, & they lived in Boulogne. His brother Edward [sic] was music critic of the Times of that epoch. Charles & Laura brought up my mother when she was orphaned."

Bockenfield Manor, Northumberland
Bockenfield Manor, Northumberland
The small but extremely quaint seventeenth-century manor house of the Herons is a narrow building with a frontage of sixty feet to the south, and has a central doorway with two three-light windows on either side. Between the windows and on the external angles of the house are flat pilasters of V jointed ashlar courses, which terminate above a cable moulding in a carved finial. The doorway is flanked by columns worked in spiral form, which support a curved pediment enclosing a shield, helmet and mantling, the fromer bearing the arms of Heron; gules, a chevron between three herons argent. All the windows were originally of the same design, being of three lights with transoms, and enclosed by an architrave formed of an unusual bobbin-like ornament. In the interior is a spacious staircase, with turned wooden balusters, but there is little lse of interest. The surface of the adjoining land is very uneven, and indicates buried foundations of considerable buildings.

There are two places outside Bowes known as North Side, only a few hundred yards from each other. It is not clear which was the one connected with the Laidmans, unless they both form one property, but in view of the distance between them, this seems unlikely.
